Valerie Keyes currently serves as the Director of Personnel Security and Identity Management, Department of National Defence, with over thirty years of experience in the federal Public Service.  She served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 13 years prior to joining the Public Service.

Valerie is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the Royal Military College of Canada, and in May 2015 became the first Canadian to receive the Master of Science in Leadership from the Olin School of Business, Washington University in St Louis.

Valerie spent most of her Public Service career in National Defence, in such diverse roles as government relations, humanitarian policy operations, and Western Hemisphere defence relations.  She also served as Special Adviser to the British Army on peacekeeping policies and doctrine, as well as ethos and leadership.  Other appointments included Public Works Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and the Privy Council Office.

Valerie was elected as the first woman President of the Royal Military Colleges Club of Canada in September, 1998. She is currently a member of the Boards of Directors of the RA Centre Ottawa, and the Canadian Fencing Federation.  She was also recently named a Top Female Executive by the International Women’s Leadership Association, and was featured in the Women of Distinction Magazine.  She is a member of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and has embarked on a doctoral programme focusing on the role of agnotology in public policy development.

Valerie has been associated with the RA Centre for many years, through children’s programming and fitness courses.  She was Treasurer of the RA Fencing Club for seven years, prior to joining the RA Board in 2011.
