(July 30, 2015 – Ottawa, ON)

For the second year in a row, the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) and the Rideau Tennis Club (a member of the Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada family) have smashed the Junior Tennis landscape with the Roman Cup Memorial Tournament by welcoming 450 entries, a growth of 132 over the previous year. In 2014, with 318 the Roman Cup Memorial Tournament became the largest junior tournament in the country. Ottawa tennis enthusiasts are encouraged to drop by to enjoy the action.  Admission to the tournament is free from July 30 until August 3.

The Roman Cup Memorial Tournament includes junior tennis opportunities for ages U12, U14, and U16 as part of the National Junior Qualifying series. The tournament also offers opportunities for U10 and U18. During the event players will compete in singles and doubles play. This tournament provides participants the opportunity to earn points for the National Rogers Rankings as well as awarding travel bursaries to the Championship finalists.

“The Roman Cup weekend has evolved into a top tier tennis event,” says Kelly Shaw-Swettenham, Director, Rideau Tennis Club, “This event showcases top national and provincial talent and exposes developing players to high level tennis matches. The Rideau Tennis Club is proud to support the Roman Cup Memorial Tournament again this year and invites fans of the game to come enjoy the action.”

Not only is the Rideau Tennis Club hosting the Roman Cup Tournament, starting Friday the Sporting Life Ontario Open begins with over 70 local adult tennis players competing for a share of the $12,000 prize pool and ranking points. Admission to the tournament is free from July 31 until August 3.

“The OTA is excited by the progress of tennis in the National Capital Region. Hosting events of this magnitude at a beautiful location such as the Rideau Tennis Club, will only enhance the experience for our talented players and fans of the game,” shared Kartik Vyas, OTA Player Development Manager, “Our partnership with the Rideau Tennis Club has allowed us to grow this event from humble beginnings to be one of, if not the largest, junior tennis event in the country.”

The Roman Cup Memorial Tournament began in 2008 after the passing of Roman Kowalski who grew up playing tennis at the Rideau Tennis Club. Roman was taken from the tennis community in his prime at 22 years young in August of 2007. Roman was an avid tennis player who competed with his high school and university teams and travelled to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy to train with the world’s best. Roman spent the last year of his life back in Ottawa with family and friends and teaching tennis at the Rideau Tennis Club, where he won both singles and doubles titles of the Winter Club Championship. The Roman Cup Memorial Tournament was created in honour of Roman and his family, and their passion and dedication to tennis. Marlen and Mike Cowpland continue to support junior tennis development through their generous donation to this tournament.
