FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Roman Cup Memorial Tournament the Largest Junior Tennis Competition in Canada

The Rideau Tennis Club and Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada (RA) are proud to partner with the Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) to support the largest Junior Tournament in Canada with the commencement of the Roman Cup Memorial Tournament placing over 318 registered entries. Players from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia will be competing in a range of age groups at the Rideau Tennis Club, located at 1 Donald Street. Ottawa tennis enthusiasts are encouraged to drop by to be a part of the action. Admission is free.

The Roman Cup Memorial Tournament includes junior tennis opportunities for ages U12, U14 and U16 as part of the National Junior Development Four Star Series. The tournament also offers opportunities for U10 and U18. During the event players will compete in singles and doubles play. This tournament provides participants the opportunity to earn points for the OTA Rogers Rankings.

“The Roman Cup weekend provides the opportunity for the Rideau Tennis Club and the OTA to feature top rated tennis in the Ottawa community,” says Club Manager Nancy Kirkwood, “Although our club offers junior development reflective of the principals of Tennis Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Program, this event allows us to showcase top national and provincial talent and expose developing players to high level tennis matches. With Canada’s recent success on the international stage, we hope build upon that excitement and inspire a new generation of players.”

The Rideau Tennis Club is hosting a weeks’ worth of tennis excellence starting with the World Athlete Management (WAM) Sport College Tennis Exposure Camp Monday and Tuesday. This is followed up with the Ontario Open and Roman Cup Memorial Tournament. On Thursday, July 31 starting at 6:00pm the Club hosts the annual PRO-AM, to raise money for the Ottawa Junior Development Fund. This weekend will see plenty of high caliber talent concluding with the finals scheduled on Monday.

The Roman Cup Memorial Tournament began in 2008 after the passing of Roman Kowalski who grew up playing tennis at the Rideau Tennis Club. Roman was taken from the tennis community in his prime at 22 years young in August of 2007. Roman was an avid tennis player who competed with his high school and university, teams and travelled to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy to train with the world’s best. Roman spent the last year of his life back in Ottawa with family and friends and teaching tennis at the Rideau Tennis Club, where he won both singles and doubles titles of the Winter Club championships. The Roman Cup Memorial Ontario Junior Open was created in honour of Roman and his family, and their passion and dedication to tennis. Marlen and Mike Cowpland continue to support junior tennis development through their generous donation to this tournament.
